Minister calls on Israel to allow Irish ship carrying aid to Gaza
The Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin today called on Israel to allow his ship “MV Rachel Corrie” to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, despite a military blockade imposed in that territory.
In a statement, the minister considered it “imperative” to miss the Irish-owned vessel, which may be in the exclusion zone around Gaza on Friday or Saturday.
“I repeat again my urgent request to the Israeli Government to allow the safe passage of the Irish-owned vessel, the MV Rachel Corrie, who still sail to Gaza to deliver a cargo of humanitarian aid,” said Martin.
“It is imperative that no more confrontation and bloodshed in what has been a purely humanitarian mission,” the minister said, referring to the flotilla was attacked on Monday by a group of Israeli army elite.
“The Government (Irish) maintain close contacts with the Israelis about this issue in the coming days,” he said.
Nine people were killed and several injured in the assault the group of six ships carrying more than 750 people with humanitarian aid for Gaza.
