U.S. evaluates new measures against North Korea

In response to the collapse of the South Korean frigate “Cheonan” in late March, the United States is considering further action, beyond the debate in the Security Council of the United Nations Organization (UN) Saturday said U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates at a security conference in Singapore Asia.

“We evaluated additional capabilities, to hold North Korea,” said Gates according to the text of a speech, according to information from the agency DPA. “The nations of this region have the common task of responding to these dangerous provocations. Doing nothing would mean that we are avoiding our common responsibility to protect peace and enhance stability in Asia.”

An international commission blames North Korea for firing mortar rounds that hit the cruiser “Cheonan” Ten weeks ago, an incident that killed 46 sailors.

North Korea rejected any blame for the sinking of the boat and threatened to retaliate if it is punitive measures.

South Korea on Friday formally asked the Security Council of the UN to “act” and take “appropriate measures” in relation to the attack on the corvette “Cheonan” on 26 March.

The Security Council responded to the request by announcing that begin consultations.

The South Korean ambassador to the UN, Park In Kook, made the formal request is handed in a letter to the President of the Security Council, the Mexican diplomat Claude Heller.
